Confession time. We binged Netflix's Emily in Paris and fell in love with the city of lights, American girl in Paris storyline, fashion, wine, croissants, love triangles, men, women, friendships, and of course, the French girl beauty looks.
In case you haven't streamed this guilty pleasure series yet, we'll fill you in without spoiling anything major. Lily Collins plays Emily Cooper, a 20-something from Chicago with a Masters in Communications - who lands the dream job of a lifetime - a social media strategy position at Savoir in Paris.
Her fashion choices range from classic to cool, and her makeup plays the same game. The brunette beauty appears seamless in every scene which isn't annoying at all - and makes living vicariously through Emily Cooper all the more fun, if you ask us. It's true, because we gallivanted around Paris with her, even if we did it from the couch.
Because we hearted this show so hard, we studied scenes and did the nitty-gritty research to find out how Lily Collins pulled off Emily Cooper's cheeky, flirty, classic beauty looks. Read ahead, for the French girl makeup tips and our product recommendations.
Whether Emily Cooper played by the lovely Lily Collins was running around Paris in a crop top - getting her sweat on, meeting her bestie Mindy (Ashley Park) for coffee, or the belle of the ball at the ballet, her skin always looked flawless and the epitome of porcelain perfection. What's her secret? Well, the show's Paris-based lead makeup artist, Aurélie Payen told Refinery29, "As a makeup artist for almost 20 years, I know that skin care is the most important everyday ritual before makeup." So, prior to creating makeup looks for Lily's scenes in Netflix's Emily in Paris, Payen reached for a balancing mist toner, to refresh and revive the actress's complexion. Why? Toner helps to seal hydration when applied immediately before serums and moisturizers. In Fact, Lily Collins happens to love Glossier's Soothing Face Mist. She has said, "I’ll spray it any time of day, and it just feels so good on my skin because it wakes me up and feels like the spa." This vegan rosewater toner calms down inflammation, packs aloe to hydrate, and glycerin to lock in moisture. Oh and the light floral scent is lovely.
Two words when it comes to Lily Collins: Brow Goals. Here's the tea on her signature big, brushed up brows. You'd be surprised to learn, that she doesn't enlist a professional to pluck, wax, thread, or microblade her beautiful bushy brows. We know, amazing. The glam girl, does them herself. Lily Collins told GLAMOUR UK in a 2018 interview, that she spent her High School years "hacking away" at her now infamous eyebrows - ah, didn't we all? Yes. These days, however, we think that Lilly Collins ties with model, Cara Delevingne, for best eyebrows ever. “I do it all myself - I simply look in a magnifying mirror, get the tweezers and follow the line. I don’t let anyone touch them. I really think less is more and I like to mess them up. But to be honest, I do maintenance every night,” Lily has said. Every night and a magnifying glass? Now that is dedication. The Emily in Paris actress even calls them "a work of art," and we second that. To keep her eyebrows brushed up and in place on the set, the makeup artist swiped on Anastasia Beverly Hills, clear brow gel. The soothing chamomile formula conditions each hair and produces a lustrous, natural look - while the long-wearing clear gel sets and defines brows without fuss. Buy a tube for yourself on MIRA.
Fact: Lily Collins is blessed with naturally bushy brows, that she apparently self-maintains on the regular. So, creating Emily Cooper's signature big brow look was easy-peasy for Aurélie Payen. The makeup artist used a handy cosmetic hack to perk up Lily's already bold brows: She magnified their manicured arch shape by simply highlighting them with Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage Concealer in a hue, just a tad lighter than her natural skin tone. The two-shade concealer can be color-customized to address your personal tone and imperfections. One shade is formulated to match skin’s depth of color, while the other matches skin’s undertone. This dual-shade camo lasts for up to 8 hours, contains soothing aloe and chamomile extracts, plus skin-conditioning vitamins A, C, and E. Here's the thing about Collins's immaculately manicured brows - they are the most important accessory to Emily Cooper's chic blazers, sunny outfits, tie-die sweatshirt, crop top, metallic green jacket, red beret, bucket hat, black flock ... they are everything. So, getting the eyebrow grooming products just right - is key.
Emily took on Paris with some no-nonsense, seriously ultra-black pigmented lashes. And as a Lancôme ambassador, Lily Collins has her fair share of beauty products to pick from. To get Emily's sought after French-girl lustrous, inky lashes, we like Lancôme Monsieur Big Mascara. The formula produces a false lash effect with up to 12x more volume and up to 24 hours of wear (for when you're dancing all night in a club with Holy Hot, Lucas Bravo's Gabriel, of course). Lily Collins swears by this volumizing, lengthening and smudge-proof mascara. The black tube hosts a soft brush with wavy fiber bristles that deliver high-impact vibes.
We love Pat McGrath Labs' products - as much as we love Emily Cooper's many screen siren glamour makeup looks in the Netflix series. So, it's no wonder her red, power pout is one of "Mother's" sensual lippies. Specifically, Matte Trance Lipstick in Obsessed, which makes sense, because we're obsessed with Em's flawless, red evening lip in Episode 6, Ringarde. We won't spoil the magic for you, but there is a trip to the ballet at the Palais Garnier, a black frock Audrey Hepburn would approve of, and a girl boss power move if we ever saw one! (You'll just have to watch!) Anyway, back to Emily's luscious lips. Pat McGrath Labs' lipsticks are known to be equal parts richly pigmented and creamy. They evoke that timeless, sexy, pinup glamour girl vibe - just look at the tube. The black-lacquered couture case is sealed with a bold, gold kiss.
Emily Cooper rocks a pretty pinkish-nude pout throughout the series, when she's not going all-out glam. It amplifies her gorgeous, manicured, square brows and cheek bones - giving off a sexy no-makeup-makeup, didn't try too hard look. The nude formula adds subtle, light-reflective color to her pout. Plus, this bullet lipstick from Givenchy is cool-toned with hints of muted pink and works well on paler skin tones, like Lilly Collins'. Emily's workday makeup at Savoir was all about natural beauty and a healthy, youthful glow. This pick is ideal for barely-there color and texture, because it's infused with nourishing castor seed oil and beeswax that produces a soft, supple feel.
As you know, here at MIRA, we love a good multitasking product. They work overtime to get you looking pretty and on point, so you can get out of the door faster. As it turns out, word on the set of Netflix's Emily in Paris, is that makeup artist, Aurélie Payen was all about spreading the love - and by that we mean double-dipping and dabbing the apples of Lily Collins's cheeks and eyelids with rosy cream blush. While Payen opted for a cream blush by Tom Ford, for about half of the price, you can achieve Emily Cooper's optimistic, youthful, flushed glow with this organic cream blush by Juice Beauty. It's available in 4 hues: Flush Nude Beige, Orange Blossom Bright Coral, Peony Raspberry Pink — and Seashell Bright Pink (which is quintessential Emily Cooper, if we ever saw a shade). The plant-derived product is certified organic and vegan, and packs vegetable glycerin and phospholipids to hydrate your skin. It's age-defying serum technology, also offers a plumping effect for youthful radiance. This little pot of product triples as a blush, eyeshadow, and sheer lip tint.
