5 tips to help you feel better physically, mentally, and spiritually
The world around us is rapidly changing, and it’s natural to feel stressed and uneasy in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. While it’s easy to get lost in your thoughts or that work from home life, it’s more important than ever to prioritize self-care as we adjust to this new normal. Mental health is just as important as physical care, and just a few minutes of self-love each day can relieve anxiety and help you feel better physically, mentally, and spiritually. Here are 5 self-care activities to treat yourself with kindness during quarantine.
- Paint your nails
When all the salons are closed… you do what you need to do, right? But seriously, painting your nails isn’t just a fun way to treat yourself, but a legitimate coping mechanism and form of stress relief. Studies have shown that this activity is a brief, but effective escape from negative thoughts. The repetitive motion of the paint strokes, and level of concentration that this activity requires, gives you a more positive mindset and helps you feel special while you’re stuck at home. There’s a sense of satisfaction that comes with a freshly painted set of nails, and it’s always nice to see a beautiful color when you’re washing your hands (for 20 seconds!) repeatedly every day.
- Do stretches
“Rise and shine!” It’s not just an annoying thing your mom says to you, or a “song” by Kylie Jenner that (for whatever reason) almost broke the Internet. It’s a quote of empowerment to wake up and make every day count, even when you’re stuck in quarantine. How to do this? Try stretching. Every morning when you wake up, spend a few minutes stretching your arms, legs, and back to relieve tight muscles and uncomfortable tension in your joints. Repeat again before bed for even better results.
Stretching only takes a few minutes out of your day, but the benefits are endless. You’ll feel less stressed, reduce aches and pains, improve your posture, and simply have a reason to get off the couch. Now that is what self-care activities are all about.
- Stream a series
Listen, you don’t need to always be productive during quarantine. In fact, you can even take this time to give yourself a break from the 9-5 life and enjoy the little things, like the fact that you have a perfectly good couch, tons of snacks, and a Netflix account. While binge-watching Tiger King in two days may not be the best idea, it’s always nice to treat yourself to an episode or two at the end of the day after you’ve done your remote york or virtual yoga class.
One reason to try meditation? It’s one of the celebrity-approved self-care activities. Download meditation apps like Headspace or Calm to start your journey and relieve stress and anxieties during these difficult times.
- Facetime a friend
Practicing social-distancing doesn’t mean you need to be lonely. We live in the era of Facetime, TikTok and Instagram Live… and it’s incredibly easy (maybe too easy) to virtually communicate with your mom or best friend. Or like 10 of your friends. Make it a party with a glass of wine and Cards Against Humanity. Or if you’re in the mood to practice your makeup, go live on Instagram and share your routine with your adoring followers. Basically, this is your chance to bring out your inner influencer and say “Hey guys, welcome back to my channel!”
This is one of the most important self-care activities, as a little social interaction can go a long way in helping you deal with emotions and feel human connection. Open up your laptop and watch “Real Housewives” with your mom over Facetime like you normally do every week… you both deserve it.
