Recycling isn’t just for empty soda cans, it’s also for the plastic wrap from all the beauty products you impulse-bought in the year 2020. And so many other things. As we celebrate Americas Recycles Day on November 15th, we must reevaluate our pledge to be kind to the planet, and educate ourselves on how to best recycle and go green in our everyday lives. While there are plenty of drives and events taking place around the country, the journey to recycling often starts right from your makeup bag. You can aim to purchase only the most sustainable, zero waste beauty and makeup products… and check if your favorite brands offer recycling programs to help the environment. Did you know that that recycling can even get you a free MAC lipstick? Or five? Being kind to the planet is a beautiful thing, and you can start simple with these everyday makeup products that are 100% recyclable!
While bubble wrap can be fun to play with sometimes, it’s not exactly good for the planet. That’s why Kinship founders Christin Powell and Alison Haljun decided to not only skip this step when packaging products, but use only ocean waste and other recyclable plastics to create the brand’s jars. It was estimated that in 2019 alone, Kinship removed 1.5 tons of plastic from the oceans to package their clean and clinically-effective skincare products - including the SuperMello Hydrating Gel Creme Moisturizer. This everyday product features Marshmallow Root for hydrating and antioxidant power, Coconut Water to infuse your face with amino acids and proteins, and Hyaluronic Acid for a major boost of moisture. Oh, and plant-based probiotic Kinbiome™, which supports the natural moisture barrier and creates your most clear complexion. If those nourishing ingredients weren’t enough to make you try this sweet moisturizer, just remember that it’s a zero waste beauty product that’s not only kind to your skin - but also the oceans!
If there’s one thing to know about Jessica Alba’s beauty line, it’s that Honest is clean and natural. According to a company blog post, even the electricity used in the headquarters and warehouse is from 100% renewable sources, while furnishings are made from sustainable and eco-friendly materials. So you know that Honest Beauty makeup products are approved for America Recycles Day. They’re all made with 100% recyclable materials, and the formulas are equally clean and kind to your skin. Or should we say, Honest? CCC Clean Corrective With Vitamin C Tinted Moisturizer is a 6-in-1 multitasker that “primes, perfects, protects, blurs, brightens and locks in moisture for up to 12 hours.” Um, hello glowing skin. Vitamin C helps to even out skin tone and texture, repair free radical damage, brighten your look and even protect against the harmful effects of the sun with built-in SPF. Talk about a multitasking product. Give your skin the A-list glow up it deserves with one of your favorite sustainable beauty brands.
"It was critical to us that Kinship have a tangible impact on the planet and our global climate crisis,” Kinship co-founder Alison Haljun told POPSUGAR about the brand’s sustainable and eco-friendly packaging. We’re not quite done talking about Kinship, as it’s not just the brand’s sweet beauty products that are safe and clean. Each product, including the Pimple Potion Retinal + Salicylic Acid Treatment, features a QR code printed at the bottom that you can scan on the Ocean Wastes Plastics website - providing you with the exact coordinates where your packaging was sourced. Pretty cool, right? After you’ve checked the location of your pretty and zero waste packaging, you can apply a few dabs of the Pimple Potion to prevent and clear up acne. It contains Retinol to accelerate cell turnover and reduce blemishes, plus the gentler Retinol-like ingredient Bakuchiol for all the benefits of this Vitamin A derivative, minus the irritation. Zits are zapped even further with Salicylic Acid, the powerful BHA that’s known for its acne-fighting abilities. Kinship provides the best zero waste makeup and skincare products to put your best, and most clear, face forward on America Recycles Day.

This hydrating, smoothing, and lightweight formula feels lovely on your delicate lips, and you can glide it on guilt-free knowing that this product is 100% recyclable. While half of the packaging is made with recycled plastic, you can also simply toss the empty tube at a curbside recycling center (like TerraCycle) to make the most of your balm. Kiehl’s is a men’s grooming must-have with all the cleansers, face masks, and serums you could need - but did you know that the brand also has a “Recycle and Be Rewarded” program? Since 2009, the program has been in place at many retail stores, and encourages shoppers to recycle empty Kiehl’s jars and bottles to earn points towards travel-sized beauty products. Kiehl’s also has a partnership with TerraCycle, and uses recyclable packaging in their products whenever possible. Yet another reason to steal your boyfriend’s facial scrub, are we right? Or in this case, the Rare Earth Deep Pore Cleansing Mask. This purifying treatment features Amazonian White Clay to reach deep within the skin and remove dirt and toxins, while giving you an even texture that feels smooth and soft. It also contains Aloe Barbadensis to further soothe even the most stressed skin, and this mask has been clinically proven to reduce oil production by nearly 50%. Stock up on all the Kiehl’s products you can find, recycle them at your local retail store, grab your travel-sized product rewards, and then recycle those too. It’s the circle of skincare, guys.
Concealer is a holy grail everyday makeup product, giving you a boost of brightness for everything from Zoom school to a socially-distanced hangout at home. And you’ll see recyclable, sustainable products in a new light (literally) with Inner Light Concealer. This creamy, full-coverage formula covers up dark circles and tired eyes like no other, infused with reflective minerals to add radiance to the skin and hide last night’s binge-watching session. The best part? After you’ve scraped the sides to ensure that you’ve gotten every last bit of product for your under eyes, you can toss the tube into a recycling center to be environmentally friendly. Aveda has a partnership with g2 Revolution, allowing any leftover packaging from brand products to be recycled, reused, or burned for energy recovery. The brand also uses post consumer recycled materials in more than 85% of products - helping you stock up on makeup and skincare that’s gorgeous and guilt-free.
You may have heard about MAC Lipstick, the creamy and ultra-pigmented product that made the brand famous. It’s beloved by everybody from A-list celebrities and RuPaul’s queens to beauty beginners who simply want a swipe of red for French girl glamour - and you’ll feel less guilty stocking up on every shade of this iconic product knowing that it’s 100% recyclable. BACK 2 MAC is a recycling program that’s been in place for years - encouraging customers to collect six empty product tubes or containers and return them to a local MAC store for a free lipstick. Who doesn’t love MAC and their tendency to give out free lipstick? According to the company website, the BACK to MAC program has “prevented nearly one million pounds of material from ending up directly in landfills per year, saving 500 tons of energy” in North America alone. Around 107,000 pounds of material is recycled each year with this program, and you can rest easy knowing that all the lipstick you’re buying this holiday season for your glam makeup lover friends is for a good cause.
How do you know that a brand truly cares about the environment? They enable a mail-in recycling program for empty beauty products - many of which aren’t even their own! That’s right, ILIA has a partnership with TerraCycle that allows United States customers to mail in up to five empty bottles or tubes each month to prevent them from going into a landfill. While many of these products aren’t ILIA’s, many are… like the Limitless Lash Mascara. Mascara is a product that’s known for being easily recyclable, as the tube and wand have many uses that should definitely keep them out of the garbage, and you’ll never look back after trying this ILIA product. It’s clean and 99% natural, and takes your lashes to great lengths with a blend of organic Bee and Carnauba Waxes to condition each one, along with Shea Butter to boost and enhance. It’s ideal for both everyday and luxury makeup looks!
